Although the only way to know for certain is to see your physician, the booklet Why You Should Know About Melanoma, published by the ACS in cooperation with the American Academy of Dermatology, lists four “ABCD” warning signs of melanoma: Asymmetry (one half does not match the other half), Border Irregularity (the edges are ragged, notched, or blurred), Color (pigmentation is not uniform), and Diameter is greater than 1/4 inch (6 mm) (any sudden or continuing increase in size should be of special concern).
