Does the Commission expect public opinion in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, which it recommended for the status of candidate Member State on 9 November 2005, will ever accept that its constitutional name ‘Republika Makedonija’, which between 1945 and 1992 was already the undisputed name of a republic within the Federation of Yugoslavia, and which is based on the name ‘Macedonia’, and the adjective ‘Macedonian’, widely used since the 19th century to refer to the language, people and independence movement of the Slav inhabitants of this area, will be changed merely because of the objections of the country's southern neighbour?
