그녀는 야자 나무 껍질을 벗겨서, 실처럼 잘게 쪼갠 다음, 손으로 돌돌 말아서 좀 더 두꺼운 실을 만들었어요. 그리고 그 실을 엮어서, 이렇게 생긴 가방을 만들어냈어요. 바로 제 눈앞에서 3일 만에요. 그 때, 이 세상에 있는 모든 물건들에 대한 의문점이 풀리기 시작했어요. 저는 이 가방과 옷, 집에서 쓰는 트램폴린, 연필깎이 등 우리가 가지고 있는 모든 물건들이, 나무나 돌 아니면 우리가 땅을 파면 나오는 것들을 어떤 과정을 통해, 또 때로는 좀 더 복잡한 공정을 거쳐 만든다는 것을 알게되었어요.
She was peeling this palm frond apart, these little threads off of it, and she'd roll the threads together and make little thicker threads, like strings, and she would weave the strings together, and as the materiality of this exact very bag formed before my eyes over those three days, the materiality of the way the world works, of reality, kind of started to unravel in my mind, because I realized that this bag and these clothes and the trampoline you have at home and the pencil sharpener, everything you have is made out of either a tree or a rock or something we dug out of the ground and did some process to, maybe a more complicated one, but still, everything was made that way.ted2019 ted2019
