Genom en låg marklutning i främst norra Oberlausitz, höga grundvattennivåer, ogynnsamma sandjordar och kärrjordar samt stora ytor i adlig ägo, kunde dammodlingen en gång i tiden utvecklas och förgrena sig över nästan hela Oberlausitz, och den präglar i hög grad landskapet än i dag.
