The deep-sea mineral deposits with economic potential are the seafloor massive sulphides (rich in copper, zinc, lead, silver and gold) associated with the hydrothermal vents, at depths of 400-5 000 metres; the polymetallic nodules (rich in manganese, with nickel, copper and cobalt content), lying on the sea-bottom sediments at a depth of 4 000-6 000 metres, and the cobalt-rich crusts (rich in manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel and platinum) which occur on seamounts and around the flanks of volcanic islands at about 400-4 000 metres deep.
